The NHL’s Board of Governors approved a change to the offside challenge rule. There will now be a two-minute penalty assessed for an unsuccessful Coach’s Challenge to an offside infraction leading to goals.
Here’s the official rule
Rule 78.7(b) now will read:
“b) If the result of the challenge is that the play was on-side, the goal shall count and the team that issues the challenge shall be assessed a minor penalty for delaying the game”
The NHL approved a new rule to stop fake offside challenges so coaches can get a timeout in, even if they knew their challenge wouldn’t be reversed.
I think this is a good rule. It was by a vote of 30-1. The Pittsburgh Penguins were against the change, because they want to see the league get it right.
