Who to watch for at the World Juniors

By Brandon J. Koch

Happy World Juniors, hockey fans.

The World junior championships are at KeyBank Center and HarborCenter, along with the outdoor game Friday at NewEra Field.

There are Sabres prospects in this tournament, but who else should you watchout for? Here’s what I’m looking at:

Rasmus Dahlin team Sweden: Arguably the top player in this coming NHL entry draft. Complete defenseman that the Sabres need. Skating is really good, joining the rush, acceleration, hockey smarts. Will be a shutdown defenseman in this tournament. Sabres fans will have their eyes on him.

Andrei Svechnikov team Russia: A top prospect in the upcoming 2018 NHL entry draft. Will be reguarded as one of most exciting players in this tournament. He has top offensive ability and should be at the top of the leader board in points. Russia’s best player will be a big reason they get a medal.

Brady Tkachuk team USA: Potential top 5 pick in the 2018 entry draft is a player that will be a big contributor if the US repeats gold. His speed and skill sets and stick handing with the puck, also physicality are strong suits.

Filip Zadina team Czech Republic: Look for his power and strength. He wins puck battles, he protects the puck well. He can score, look for him at a top 6 spot for Czech in this tournament. He has a variety of shots at his disposal that he’s good at.
